Great news for locals and visitors in the North Myrtle Beach area. The Robert Edge Parkway (aka the Main Street Connector) is projected to open August 20th. This new road will connect Caolina Bays Parkway (aka Highway 31) directly to Highway 17 in North Myrtle Beach at the Main Street intersection.
Why is this road so important? Well, as many folks know, our area has grown at a rapid pace for decades. The original road structures put in place were not ideal for handling the mass amounts of visitors each year. Additionally, the growth to the area brought in lots of folks from all over looking to relocate which increased year round traffic along the Grand Strand.
County planners constructed Highway 22 and Highway 31 a few years back to help those who wanted to bypass some of the "town traffic" get from the north to south end as well as in from Florence or Conway. Those two roads have helped tremendously with traffic and were also needed in the area for evacuation purposes.
The next project on the table is to widen Highway 17 coming in from SC 9 to about 2nd Ave North in North Myrtle Beach. This area gets congested due to the recent growth through this stretch. This project would not be complete before possibly April 2010. GREAT news for a growing area - visitors to the area shouldn't waste precious time sitting in traffic! The great thing about the Grand Strand is that most everything is only a short drive north or south of all vacation rentals. Less congestion - more fun - North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina!
