History of the North Myrtle Beach Grand Strand

The Name

It’s said that the term “Grand Strand” was coined by Claude Dunnagan, a columnist for the Myrtle Beach Sun. While writing an article about the area, he found out that the word “strand” was the German word for “beach”. The original column appeared on December 3, 1949, and Dunnagan’s term was quickly picked up by other media. Today, the phrase represents a whole string of communities and is used by area locals and visitors alike.

The Land

Did you know that the Myrtle Beach area was inhabited by Waccamaw Indians before settlers arrived? The Waccamaw name is still prevalent throughout the region today! Then, in 1899, the Conway & Seashore Railroad was built and began service. Railroad workers spent their free weekends on the sandy beaches and became the area’s very first tourists. From there, the town slowly grew from a small farming community into a sought-after beach destination.

The Towns

A common misconception about the Grand Strand is that it only encompasses Myrtle Beach. There are actually multiple towns that call this region home! Myrtle Beach is the heart of it all and is centrally located on the Grand Strand. Its famous boardwalk, attractions, and restaurants are wildly popular during the summer season.
North Myrtle Beach is also part of the Strand and is an ideal vacation destination for golfers, couples, and families. (Visitors often prefer staying here because it’s just close to all the action, but just far away enough from the flashing neon lights.) This area offers similar attractions to Myrtle, including water sports, golf, and mini golf. You can also enjoy a wide variety of restaurants and shops. We suggest signing up for the one-hour Sunset Island Beach Ride on Waiters Island. You’ll make your way through the dunes onto a private beach where you can ride along the oceanfront at sunset. The Waterway Trail Ride is another great option and takes guests through pecan groves along the Intracoastal Waterway.

Horseback Riding of Myrtle Beach

Horseback Riding of Myrtle Beach also offers fantastic horseback rides in Myrtle Beach, Conway, and Garden City Beach. The company has calm, well-trained horses, so no prior riding experience is necessary. (If you do have prior experience, you’re welcome to trot rather than walk!) They’ll even take pictures along the way that you can take home with you at the end of your adventure.

Wampee Stables

Just five minutes from the ocean and Main Street in North Myrtle Beach, a ride with Wampee Stables is a great way to spend the afternoon. Their trail rides are about 1.5 hours long and allow you to get to know your horse beforehand. The tour guide will also answer any questions you may have before you head out on the trail. Guided horseback rides at Wampee Stables are available by appointment only. Call ahead to make your reservations.

Myrtle Beach State Park

If you have your own horse or have access to one, Myrtle Beach State Park allows visitors to horseback ride on the beach. Horses are only allowed in the state park from November through February, so be sure to plan accordingly.

Murrells Inlet

If you happen to be taking a day trip to Murrells Inlet on the 4th of July, check out their annual Boat Parade! Taking place on Wednesday, July 4, this parade will last from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. It winds from Garden City Point through the Murrells Inlet MarshWalk. After the parade ends, stick around for the 10:00 p.m. fireworks show at the end of Veterans Pier!

Get ready to cruise through the waterways of the Carolinas on a Voyager dolphin adventure trip! Myrtle Beach Watersports

With two huge 65-foot boats available for guests, Myrtle Beach Watersports is another great choice for a dolphin tour. Either the Sea Thunder and the Sea Screamer will take you on a two-hour long tour that features three distinct experiences along the way. First, you’ll enjoy a narrated cruise of the Intracoastal Waterway and will pass fishing villages and uninhabited islands, look for birds and sea turtles, and learn about the area’s history. The second part of the cruise will be the exhilarating ride into the Atlantic to find the graceful dolphins. Once the boat arrives on location, the Captain will slow down to an idle so that everyone can experience the third and best part of the cruise, the dolphin watch!

Express Watersports

Departing from Murrells Inlet, a beautiful saltwater marsh that leads to the Atlantic Ocean, Express Watersports will take you on a 1.5-hour trip along the coast. An onboard naturalist will describe the history of Murrells Inlet as you look for dolphins, sea turtles, and other aquatic life. The 46-foot vessel has a covered back deck, full-size bathroom area, and even a top sun deck that offers great views of the sea.

On the Beach

If you prefer to stay on land, don’t worry! Guests have the chance to spot dolphins almost anywhere up and down the Grand Strand. Plus, it has several perks such as public access points, many parking lots, a seaside cabana bar, beloved dive bars and restaurants, and fun ice cream shops. Families love all the “extras” because there is something for their little ones to do, especially at the Main Street access. As you walk along the scenic shoreline, stop by the giant inflatable waterslide that’s right on the beach!

Crescent Beach

Make the short trip from North Myrtle Beach to experience serene Crescent Beach. It’s located a few miles south of downtown North Myrtle. This breathtaking beach is the perfect stretch of sand to read a book, play with the kids, and indulge in some peace and quiet. You won’t find many restaurants or shops in the area except for the oceanfront pub, Molly Darcy’s.

Windy Hill

Similar to Crescent Beach, Windy Hill offers little access to tourist attractions or bustling bars near the beach. That makes it one of the most perfect of the North Myrtle Beach beaches for a quiet day in the sun.
