History of the North Myrtle Beach Grand Strand

The Name

It’s said that the term “Grand Strand” was coined by Claude Dunnagan, a columnist for the Myrtle Beach Sun. While writing an article about the area, he found out that the word “strand” was the German word for “beach”. The original column appeared on December 3, 1949, and Dunnagan’s term was quickly picked up by other media. Today, the phrase represents a whole string of communities and is used by area locals and visitors alike.

The Land

Did you know that the Myrtle Beach area was inhabited by Waccamaw Indians before settlers arrived? The Waccamaw name is still prevalent throughout the region today! Then, in 1899, the Conway & Seashore Railroad was built and began service. Railroad workers spent their free weekends on the sandy beaches and became the area’s very first tourists. From there, the town slowly grew from a small farming community into a sought-after beach destination.

The Towns

A common misconception about the Grand Strand is that it only encompasses Myrtle Beach. There are actually multiple towns that call this region home! Myrtle Beach is the heart of it all and is centrally located on the Grand Strand. Its famous boardwalk, attractions, and restaurants are wildly popular during the summer season.
North Myrtle Beach is also part of the Strand and is an ideal vacation destination for golfers, couples, and families. (Visitors often prefer staying here because it’s just close to all the action, but just far away enough from the flashing neon lights.) This area offers similar attractions to Myrtle, including water sports, golf, and mini golf. You can also enjoy a wide variety of restaurants and shops. The Waterway Trail Ride is another great option and takes guests through pecan groves along the Intracoastal Waterway.

Horseback Riding of Myrtle Beach

Horseback Riding of Myrtle Beach also offers fantastic horseback rides in Myrtle Beach, Conway, and Garden City Beach. The company has calm, well-trained horses, so no prior riding experience is necessary. (If you do have prior experience, you’re welcome to trot rather than walk!) They’ll even take pictures along the way that you can take home with you at the end of your adventure.

Wampee Stables

Just five minutes from the ocean and Main Street in North Myrtle Beach, a ride with Wampee Stables is a great way to spend the afternoon. Their trail rides are about 1.5 hours long and allow you to get to know your horse beforehand. The tour guide will also answer any questions you may have before you head out on the trail. Guided horseback rides at Wampee Stables are available by appointment only. Call ahead to make your reservations.

Myrtle Beach State Park

If you have your own horse or have access to one, Myrtle Beach State Park allows visitors to horseback ride on the beach. Horses are only allowed in the state park from November through February, so be sure to plan accordingly.

Our Favorite Rainy Day Activities in North Myrtle Beach

Barefoot Landing

You could easily spend a day exploring Barefoot Landing! With shops, restaurants, and fun attractions, this is a great place to spend a rainy day! Visit the T.I.G.E.R.S. Preservation Station,  which houses tigers, apes, and other exotic animals. You can even purchase a ticket for cuddles with a baby tiger and a young ape! Or you can catch a show at the Alabama Theatre. ONE the Show is a musical extravaganza unlike any other, with singing, dancing, comedy, and plenty of great hits!   

Myrtle Beach Fun Warehouse

Are you looking for a sure-fire way to tire out the kids? Visit Fun Warehouse! With an indoor inflatable jungle gym, your kids will love bouncing for hours on end. They also have a 3,500 square foot state-of-the-art laser tag arena.

Molten Mountain Indoor Mini Golf Course

Visit one of the best mini golf courses in Myrtle Beach! Molten Mountain Indoor Mini Golf Course has 18 air-conditioned holes indoors. The operating hours depend on the season, so be sure to check before heading out. A single round of golf is just $9.50 for adults and $8.50 for children.

Ripley’s Aquarium

Enjoy hours of fun at Ripley’s Aquarium. With dozens of exhibits and tanks full of exotic and colorful creatures, this is a great activity for kids of all ages. Check the aquarium’s calendar of events to see if you can catch a live show during your stay. The aquarium is open every day of the year from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Children’s Museum of South Carolina

If you’re traveling with kids under the age of five, you’ll definitely want to stop by the Children’s Museum of South Carolina. With fun exhibits and special activities in the summer, this is the perfect place to have an “edventure” (educational adventure!).
